As of 20 April 2016, Directive 2014/34/EU, as transposed into the national legislation of the EU Member States, is the sole legal instrument applicable. The terms of Annexes of the Directive, however, are modified; Present EC Type Examination Certificates will change to EU Type Examination Certificates under the new ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. What this means: A new EU-type examination certificate will be issued and will require changing of the manufacturer’s documentation. The general principle adopted in the ATEX 114 Directive is to ensure that equipment and protective systems are designed in accordance with the principles of integrated explosion protection. ATEX is subdivided into two guidelines, ATEX 137 and ATEX 95. As of April 20, 2016, the ATEX guidelines have been modified and renamed, hence, ATEX 95 has been replaced by ATEX 114 (Directive 2014/34/ EU) and ATEX 137 (Directive 1999/92/EC) now has the name ATEX 153.
